Dental Concerns for Seniors
As you age, it’s important to take care of your health–especially your dental health. This is due to the fact that there are many dental concerns specific to seniors. Below are some of the most common dental issues that seniors deal with.
Cavities
Most people associate cavities with children who constantly eat sugary snacks. It turns out that cavities are a common problem for seniors as well. As you age, the risk for tooth decay increases. Going to the dentist twice a year is a proactive way to make sure cavities are treated properly.
Dry Mouth
Dry mouth, or xerostomia, is an issue that many seniors face. According to The Oral Cancer Foundation, 20% of seniors suffer from dry mouth. It is caused by a lower flow of saliva in the mouth. To prevent dry mouth, seniors should drink plenty of fluids, with the exception of alcoholic beverages and caffeine laden drinks.
Gum Disease
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums. The onset of gum disease is not painful and many seniors may be unaware that they have it. As the disease progresses, it can make your gums sore and cause you to experience pain while chewing.
