What is a Cavity?

fairfield county dentist | fairfield dental artsYou have heard of cavities, and you may even have a few in your mouth, but do you know exactly what a cavity is? We’ve answered a few frequently asked questions about what cavities are, how they form, and what you can do to prevent them in the future.

What are cavities?

When plaque forms on your teeth, it eats away at your enamel and causes tooth decay. A cavity is the space inside of your tooth that remains after tooth decay has been removed.

How do cavities develop?

Cavities can develop on the biting surfaces of your teeth, between your teeth, or even on the root surfaces. When sugary foods and drinks sit on our teeth, the acids attack and weaken the tooth enamel. Overtime, eroding enamel leaves your teeth unprotected, allowing cavities to develop.

How can you prevent cavities?

Brush for two minutes, two times a day! It is important that you care for your oral health each and every day, as well as schedule bi-annual dental cleanings. Change your toothbrush when it is worn and make sure that you follow a healthy diet with limited sugary foods and drinks.
