Tips For Keeping Your Breath Fresh

Don’t worry; many people suffer from bad breath! Chronic halitosis, also known as bad breath, is common amongst adults, with an estimated 80 million people currently struggling with the condition. Bad breath can be embarrassing and even make you uncomfortable, but luckily, there are plenty of tips that can help you keep your breath fresh.

From the team at Fairfield Dental Arts, here are a few tips to help you stop prevent breath:

Floss Daily

Much of bad breath stems from the cleanliness of the gums and teeth. Bacteria in your mouth feed on any food particles they can find, which can cause bad breath. Flossing daily helps remove debris stuck between your teeth and gums that your toothbrush can’t reach.

Use an Antibacterial Mouthwash

In particular, bad breath in the morning is caused by the release of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) from anaerobic bacteria in your mouth. Rinsing regularly will eliminate this release from happening. Rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash helps kill the microbes in your mouth; since the rinse is a liquid, with a few swishes, most areas of the mouth can be reached.

Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking water regularly, especially after a meal, can help you clean your mouth and prevent food particles from building up. This will lessen the likelihood that bad breath will develop. Plus, staying hydrated supports overall good health and well-being!

Chew on Sugarless Gum

Chewing on a piece of sugar-free gum can help stimulate saliva production, therefore cleaning your mouth and getting rid of food debris. Just make sure it’s sugarless, as excess sugar can cause cavities!

Avoid Smoking and Tobacco Products

If you currently smoke or use tobacco products, consider quitting. If you don’t smoke or use tobacco products, don’t start! Tobacco greatly increases your chances of having bad breath by leaving a distinct, lingering smell that typically doesn’t go away even after a thorough brushing.
