5 Summer Foods That Keep Your Smile Bright

dentist in fairfieldLooking for a healthy, but seasonal summer snack?  Here are a few foods that will keep your smile bright and white.

Summer Tooth Whitening Foods:

  1. Oranges – Citrus fruits cause your mouth to produce more saliva, which cleans your teeth naturally! Just be careful — too much acidity can damage your tooth enamel.
  2. Pineapples – Pineapples naturally contain an anti-inflammatory compound that can help remove stains. It’s the same ingredient that is found in stain-removing toothpaste!
  3. Strawberries – This smile brightening summer fruit might come as a surprise. Although strawberries will stain your white summer tee, they could actually help brighten your smile. Strawberries contain an enzyme known as malic acid that can help remove surface stains.
  4. Broccoli – This high fiber vegetable can help reduce inflammation in your mouth (and the rest of your body). Adding raw broccoli to your next salad can help clean and polish your teeth. The iron in broccoli can also protect your teeth against acid that degrades your tooth enamel.
  5. Cheese – Cheese contains minerals, like calcium and phosphorus, that help keep your teeth strong!

Remember to stay hydrated this summer too! Water can help keep stains off of your teeth.

Accidents happen — and it’s important to be prepared. In the unfortunate event you find yourself with a missing tooth, here are the steps that you should take.

What to Do When You Lose a Tooth:

  1. Grab the tooth by the crown (not the root).
  2. Try to place the tooth back in your mouth. Bit down gently on gauze to keep it in place. Be careful not to swallow the tooth.
  3. If the tooth cannot be place back, place the tooth in a container and cover it with whole milk or saliva.
  4. Apply a cold compress to the mouth and gums to ease the pain.
  5. Visit the dentist right away.

With immediate dental care, you can avoid infection and pain.  In many cases, you will even be able to save the tooth.

While restoring your natural tooth is always our number one priority, we also offer restorative options like dental implants and bridges to help restore the functionality and aesthetics of your smile.

Here are a few of the differences between home teeth whitening avvvvnd a professional teeth whitening procedures.

Home Teeth Whitening

We create a custom-made whitening tray that fits perfectly onto your teeth for comfort and maximum whitening exposure.  When you’re at home, you can fill the trays with whitening gel and wear them for about 2 hours per day for 1-2 weeks.  These trays can be worn at any time throughout the day – whenever is convenient for you!  At the end of your home whitening treatment, you will notice a whiter smile.

Professional Teeth Whitening

ZOOM® Whitening is our in-office, professional teeth whitening procedure.  In just one hour, you can have a bright, beautiful smile.  There is no need to take home whitening trays.  Instead, your teeth whitening procedure is completed within your office visit.  During your visit, your dentist will apply a whitening solution to your teeth and switch on a light that activates the solution.  After about an hour, you’re left with a brighter smile.

Keep Your Teeth White Without Giving Up Warm Beverages This Season

Coffee, tea and hot chocolate, oh my! These are some of our favorite beverages to drink in the fall and winter. After all, they keep us warm when the weather is frigidly cold. However, all of these drinks can stain your teeth. Giving them up altogether is simply not an option. Below are some tips that will keep your teeth pearly white while you drink these warm beverages.

Drink with a Straw

Sip warm beverages through a straw. Drinking through a straw reduces contact between the beverage and your teeth.

Brush Your Teeth

After drinking a warm beverage, be sure to brush your teeth. Always carry a toothbrush and toothpaste with you. The sooner you brush your teeth, the better.

Drink Plenty of Water

Love drinking coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon? If so, drink some water in between. It will help wash away dark liquids that might be lingering on your teeth.

Consider A Whitening Procedure

Still not satisfied with your pearly whites? We can help! At Fairfield Dental Arts, our dentists are skilled professionals who will ensure that your teeth whitening experience is pleasant and painless. Give us a call today at 203-254-3780 to find out more information about this procedure or to schedule an appointment.

Tips That Will Help You Reduce Tooth Sensitivity

Do you experience tooth sensitivity when you eat something cold or hot? If so, you might be wondering what causes this. That is a very good question! We are here to answer that question and set the record straight.

What Causes Tooth Sensitivity
You will experience sensitive teeth when your gums retract and expose the underlying surface, dentin. Dentin is filled with tubes that lead to a tooth’s nerve center. When dentin is exposed to hot or cold food, it can now make contact with your tooth’s nerve. This accounts for the pain or discomfort you are feeling.

Ways To Reduce Tooth Sensitivity

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft bristled toothbrush.
  • Floss once a day.
  • Wearing a mouth guard at night can prevent you from grinding your teeth.
  • Purchase a toothpaste that caters to people with sensitive teeth.
  • Steer clear of foods and drinks that are acidic.
  • Visit your dentist at least twice a year.

Are you experiencing tooth sensitivity? Don’t suffer in silence. Instead, turn to the team of professionals at Fairfield Dental Arts. We can determine the cause of your discomfort and suggest possible treatments. Call 203-254-3780 today to request an appointment. We even have Saturday and evening appointments for your convenience.
