How Do Wisdom Teeth Work?

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Humans have three sets of molars. The last set that that form are often referred to as wisdom teeth. Most people have four wisdom teeth. In rare cases, some people have extra wisdom teeth. It is also possible to lack one or more wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth helped our ancestors eat hard to chew foods, but today they have no use. Most people have their wisdom teeth removed. In fact, wisdom teeth are the most commonly removed teeth because they can cause shifts or damage to the rest of the mouth.

Why Are They Called Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth get their name because they are usually the last teeth that develop. For most people they do not come in until the person is a teenager or in their twenties. Of course, some people may get them sooner or later, but this is the most common age group.

Why Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom teeth are removed because our mouths are usually too small to allow room for them. Our mouths are smaller than our ancestors’ mouths, due to changed diets and evolving. Wisdom teeth can become impacted, unable to come in properly, or they can cause issues with other teeth. Wisdom teeth are far back in the mouth, so they are hard to keep clean. We recommend having an x-ray to check the location of your wisdom teeth, because a lack of space for the teeth can lead to tooth misalignment.

Will I Need to Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Not everyone will need to have their wisdom teeth removed. However, we do recommend it as wisdom teeth can cause issues even when they come in properly causing a lot of problems. Wisdom teeth removal is not bad, and we will do everything we can do to make the procedure quick and easy.

How Soda Affects Your Teeth

Most Americans drink soda or some kind of sugary beverage at least once a day. Why? Because they taste good! Foods and drinks that taste good are not always good for your diet, and soda happens to be one of them. Not only does is soda associated with obesity and other common health problems, it’s also bad for your teeth! Depending on the type of soda, various oral complications can arise from use of these sugary drinks.

Teeth Staining

Dark colored soft drinks can leave a semi-permanent stain on the teeth that cannot be removed without a deep cleaning, whitening, or professional help. This discoloration occurs when the soda becomes embedded in the natural structures of the enamel, or outer layer of the tooth.

Cavities

Soda is high in sugar, and sugar erodes the teeth’s enamel by reducing its hardness. When cavities occur, often times the damage is going deeper than the enamel and hitting the dentin underneath.

Bacteria Growth

The sugars in soda combines with the natural bacteria of your mouth, forming an unwanted acid. This damages the teeth by attacking them. Think again before you take that next sip, because with each one your mouth is under attack!

Even with continuous dental check ups and keeping up with your oral hygiene, it is not recommended to have a high intake of soda. You can help your mouth and your body by choosing alternate beverage options!

What Type of Toothpaste is Right for Me?

dentist in fairfield ct | Fairfield County DentistThere are so many different types of toothpastes and toothpaste brands on the market. So how do you know which toothpaste is right for your smile health? Here are a few toothpastes you might want to test out.

I want to brighten my smile.

If you have yellowing teeth and you are looking to brighten your smile, look for a whitening toothpaste! Whitening toothpastes contain mild abrasives that polish teeth and prevent additional stains.

I have sensitive teeth!

Do you have sensitive teeth? First, you should make sure that you don’t have a cavity! If your tooth sensitivity is still bothering you, toothpastes like Sensodyne can help lessen the pain while still keeping your teeth clean and healthy.

I want to protect my teeth against cavities.

Toothpaste should help prevent tartar buildup on your teeth. Choose a toothpaste with tartar protection that keeps plaque from hardening on your teeth and prevents cavities. Crest Tartar Protection is one of the ADA-approved cavity protecting toothpastes out there.

I want to use natural products.

There are a few toothpaste brands out there that are all-natural, herbal toothpastes that are just as effective as antimicrobial brands. Just make sure that the toothpaste has the ADA seal! Tom’s of Maine is one brand that offers ADA approved toothpaste options.

In addition to brushing and flossing your teeth for two minutes, two times a day, you should also be scheduling bi-annual dental cleanings. If you’re due for your next visit, don’t hesitate to give our office a call! We can help you schedule your next appointment. Visit our website or give our office a call directly at 203-254-3780.

Tooth-Friendly Halloween Treats

fairfield dentist | dentist in fairfield | fairfield county dentistHalloween is right around the corner! As kids get ready to put on their costumes and go out trick-or-treating, it’s important that parents remember that candy contains sugars and starches that encourage plaque growth and cavities. Fortunately, by choosing the right snacks you can enjoy Halloween, while still indulging here and there.

Tooth-Friendly Treats:

  • Cheese Sticks – Cheese is full of calcium and vitamin D – nutrients that are perfect for strong, healthy teeth.
  • Xylitol Gum – Xylitol is a sugar-free sweetener that actually helps prevent cavities.
  • Apple Slices – Apples are a crunchy, fall treat. They even help clean your teeth while you eat them!
  • Sugar-Free Candy – Sugar-free candies that use alternative sweeteners like xylitol are perfect Halloween sweet treats.

If your children are indulging in Halloween candies this year, make sure that they eat their candy during one sitting. Snacking throughout the day (more than three-four times) leaves more opportunities for plaque to grow on their teeth. And of course, remember to brush and floss after!

Instantly Makeover Your Smile With Lumineers

fairfield ct dentist | Fairfield County DentistAre you unhappy with the appearance of your smile? Lumineers make it possible to have the smile you’ve always dreamed of. This unique cosmetic smile makeover corrects spaces, gaps, uneven teeth, chips, stains, and more.

Here are a few FAQs to help you determine if Lumineers are the right choice for your smile makeover.

What are Lumineers?

Lumineers are ultra-thin porcelain veneers that are bonded directly to your natural teeth.  Unlike veneers that require a dentist to grind down your original tooth structure, Lumineers are thin enough where little to no tooth reduction is necessary to create a beautiful smile.

How long will they last?

Lumineers are designed to look and last great for over 20 years.

Are Lumineers Reversible?

Yes, if you want your Lumineers removed, you can absolutely have them taken off! Since Lumineers do not damage your healthy, natural teeth, they will stay intact and strong.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The process of adding Lumineers to your smile takes just about two visits to the office. On the first visit, we will create a precise mold of your smile and determine the right shade for your smile. During your second visit, we place the Lumineers (this only takes about an hour).

We want everyone to have confidence in their smiles. If you are interesting in learning more about how Lumineers can help you enhance your smile and find confidence in a beautiful smile, visit our website or give our office a call directly at 203-254-3780.
